About the Author
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: The author, Beth Brown, lost her 20-year-old son, her only child, to suicide June 25, 2012. A mother well-acquainted with grief after suicide loss, the author also offers a companion book, Bury My Heart: Poems About Losing a Child to Suicide.
When I lost Dylan to suicide over a decade ago, I didn’t feel I could make it through my first year of grief. I could hardly make it through one breath, one hour, one day at a time. I collapsed, my world collapsed, and my world as I knew it stopped spinning.
Wanting desperately to know why my son had taken his life, I turned to books, support groups, and online resources:
- How had other parents made it through their first year of grief after their child’s suicide?
- How would grief feel in the second year?
- Would the excruciating pain of losing Dylan ever end?
- Was there any hope anywhere on the horizon?
Journaling was my saving grace. Writing helped me cope with such a profound loss. In 2015, I launched My Forever Son: Grief, Hope, and Healing After Losing My Son to Suicide. I began by posting my daily journals, though this blog has grown to encompass poems, songs, narratives, and informative articles. The photographs of all the beautiful flowers are ones I’ve taken of my gardens. They bring serenity along the way.
That we all might find peace.

Are You a Parent Who Has Lost a Child to Suicide?
As a mother who lost her only child to suicide, I found grief in the beginning (11 years ago) to be impossible. Heavy. Weighted. Exhausting. The sheering of a pain I didn’t believe I would survive. Beat Still My Heart is a poem that came from the immensity of my grief. Beat Still My Heart is part of a collection of poems: Find Hope Here: Featuring Poems About Losing a Child to Suicide.
A Poem About the Heartbreak of Losing a Child to Suicide: Beat Still My Heart
Beat Still My Heart
Beat still my heart,
Beat still my mind,
Weary though thou art,
Carry his love along with thine,
Though heavy on thy shoulders
Crost fields throughout all time.
In the deepest dark of the bleakest night,
If light there be, then dark shuts it out.
Around you all is swirling,
Hurtling backwards now through time,
A hellish hue stricken each his years
When here on earth 'twas mine.
Deeply within that starless darkest night,
Go deeper yet still darker,
Oceans depth to oceans wide.
Galaxies wide careening,
Spilling insides outside in,
To release thy soul still screaming,
Clasping hands and heart to his.
Body, mind, soul, rough and ragged,
Weeping tears falling still throughout time,
Carrying weight of mourning and grieving
Falling broken when thou wert mine.
