You’re Free Now Child: A Song About Child Loss
ABOUT THIS POST: You’re Free Now Child is a heartfelt song about child loss, accompanied by my personal story, related poems about child loss, and a book recommendation. The inclusion of personal experiences adds depth to the post. The lyrics express the ongoing pain of grieving and the longing for the lost child.
A Note About Songs for Child Loss:
I write poems and songs about child loss because I lost my only child, my son Dylan. If you’ve lost a child, then you know the acute pain of grieving your child.
It’s impossible, it’s ongoing, and it’s soul searching. I am always thinking about my son, loving and missing him, what could have, should have, would have been.
I find hope and healing writing poems and songs. Perhaps in listening and reading, you will, too.
A Note About This Blog
I write that I might heal my grief over losing my only child, my 20-year-old son, to suicide June 25, 2012.
The beautiful photographs of flowers, shrubs, and trees in bloom throughout the seasons are from my gardens.
Gardening, taking photos, and writing poems, blog posts, books, and songs bring serenity to my now upside-down world after losing my son to suicide. That we all might find peace.

ABOUT BETH BROWN, SONGWRITER: I have been writing music and lyrics since I was a child. Classically trained on violin and cello, I also play alto saxophone and guitar.
Losing My Only Child
After I lost my son, my only child, to suicide on June 25, 2012, I lost my voice. I couldn’t write, play music, eat, breathe, or sleep. Dylan was my only child, a sophomore in college, and a musician. Losing Dylan meant losing everything that I was–including my voice and my ability to play music.
Finding Hope and Healing
I began this blog, My Forever Son, as a place to heal, and eventually, I found my way back to my voice. “You’re Free Now Child” is one of my early songs about losing a child.
My voice was a mere whisper at this early point in my grief, but I found sitting with my guitar, writing, and singing soothing to my heartsick soul.
Lyrics to the Song: You’re Free Now Child
You're Free Now Child I can't see where you've gone And I don't know how to just go on Without you can't find my way Don't know where to go or what to say How to breathe without you now When it aches upon my soul In my heart, you live forever, with me by my side In my life, you're all I ever wanted My child, my one true love Without you here, each day that passes is just another day I must survive How to keep on keeping on How to open up my eyes Again to see what God has done You're free now child of mine to fly So rest on easy fly on by Soul travel now to be with God My dearest child, my heart of mine Know I'll be there when it's time I miss you more than words More than galaxies are wide I long to hold you as you were To have you reach across inside To where you live forever And to where I hold you close for life How to keep on keeping on How to open up my eyes Again to see what God has done You're free now child of mine to fly So rest on easy fly on by Soul travel now to be with God My dearest child, my heart of mine Know I'll be there when it's time Lyrics, You're Free Now Child All Music & Lyrics ©Beth Brown Songs for Child Loss

Sorrow Buried in Love So swish to sway to sweet lullaby, Baby will fall in dark of the night. Rocking cradle to grave turning truth upside down: Parents die first leaving children behind. In a world topsy-turvy that cannot make sense, Sacred trust shines the brightest in a child’s innocence. When children die first leaving parents behind, Hope flees with the child leaving grief here for life. To live without sorrow seems an admirable stance, To love without pain always breaking your heart, To smile again when it’s been enough time, To heal back to whole what was once then your life. Yet the loss of a child can’t be undone, Even though bid us well, wishing hope move us on. We can move only forward with our child whom we love, Always there with us always, sorrow buried in love.
